A rare personal update

Typically, I try to keep the posts here about tech, the web, or other things in my professional life. However, I’m still human. For once, I have a decent reason for not updating my blog or work on my “building in public” app. I’ve decided to put a pause on all of my side projects, and focus on work. Whenever I do pick back up on working on side projects, I’m probably going to go back to ol’ faithful, Ruby on Rails with some React sprinkled in....

Authenticated routing with React Native & Firebase

After the marvelous adventures of getting my boilerplate set up, it was finally time to move on to adding in users and authenticated routing. For those not in the know, authenticated routing is a method where users can only access certain routes after they have been authenticated, i.e. logged in. I more or less followed along with this blog post from LogRocket. I won’t be doing a deep dive and posting code, but the TL;DR notes for setting up authenticated routing in React Native with Firebase is as follows:...

Getting Started With React Native and Firebase

Hello, it’s me, I’ve been wondering if after all these months of not posting, you’d still like to read my blog. K now that that is out of the way, Hello again! Haven’t posted in a while (what’s new?), but hey, this whole blogging thing can be hard sometimes. Consistency is key, and for whatever reason, I just don’t post consistently enough. So anyways, I got that ol’ itch to build again, so this time, I’m using React Native ⚛️ & Firebase 🔥 to build a mobile app!...

Devise Reset Password Issues with Hotwire

The last Rails app I created, OurGroceries, was made to mess around with and learn Hotwire. Hotwire is by far a super nift and amazing piece of technology, used to create reactive and real-time applications in Rails without the need for a SPA/SPA-like JavaScript Framework. OurGroceries is super simple, and honestly HotWire is probably overkill for it, but it was a learning project, not some fancy SaaS app I’m trying to make money off of....

I bought a new domain!

I done did the thing, I got a new domain, thisisdylan.dev. As I discussed in my last post, I was really wanting something more me, and something more consistent across social media, so I could just use the same username everywhere. After mulling it over for a while, I was able to go with thisisdylandev. Not a huge fan of having “dev” in my handles, because I’m more than just a dev, but for my current social media presence, it was a pretty decent choice....

Hotwire, Bridgetown, Tailwind, oh my!

After reading up quite a bit on Hotwire, I finally felt comfortable enough with it to try it out on a project. Over the past week or so, I made a simple shared grocery list app. With Hotwire, this app can be updated in real time across multiple users, so when a user updates their grocery list, whoever they shared it with immediately sees the updates instead of refreshing the page....

I bought a GoRails subscription

I wrote recently on how I felt about JavaScript, and, to sum it up, JavaScript and I are going to see other people for the time being. So, I took to Ruby and Rails, amidst all the stuff going on recently in the community. I use it a lot at work, but figured it was a good time to just sit around and actually get good at something other than JavaScript....

JavaScript And Me

I may or may not be procrastinating finals right now. Up until the past few weeks, I’ve always reached for JavaScript for my personal projects. Things like React, Gatsby, and the MERN Stack have been my go-to tools pretty much since I started developing software. Dabbling in React Native even was super fun, and a really fun take on making a native app. I cut my teeth in the industry on Xamarin making apps, so I have some opinions on app dev, and React Native is just all around a great tool to work with, just like many of the other tools in the JavaScript ecosystem....

Long Time No See

Been a hot minute since I blogged so figured I’d give an update. My Master’s program has been pretty harsh lately so March didn’t get a project like I planned 😅 I plan on making two projects in a future month once I get finals behind me. Honestly looks like April isn’t getting one either so we’ll just see how the whole “12 Projects In A Year” thing goes. Well, update on me....

My February Project

I’ve finished up my second of 12 projects for the year, and I decided to not do front end work for the first time in a while. For this project, I built a small-scale ETL pipeline using Python. Its been quite a while since I used Python, I’ve pretty much only used it for school-related work. The project was created from following along with Karolina Sowinska’s YouTube video. I’ve messed around with Data Science & Data Engineering a lot over on DataCamp, but this was my first time doing something a little more on my own as opposed to a super guided lesson....
